Thurlow Connections

Hi, I'm Ray. Welcome aboard this web site. This is a new venture and I am still learning the ropes myself. I have links to Thurlow, Berthelsen, Madden and Dewe lines and on my wife's side to Lucey, Hanran (Hanrahan), Storrie and McPherson. I was born in Brisbane and have lived here all my life. My father, John Robinson Thurlow, born Milton, Otago 1917 arrived in Australia from New Zealand c1936 when only quite young. He came with a visiting circus bound for Sydney. After a while he moved north through New South Wales working wherever he could find a job. Eventually John ventured further afield into Queensland and found work on various SWQ sheep and cattle stations.

With the outbreak of WWII he enlisted in Toowoomba ultimately being posted to Brisbane which is where my parents met. After marrying in St Patrick's RC church, Fortitude Valley, Ruby and John honeymooned in Sydney before returning to Tenterfield, NSW where John was attending an army school in health and hygiene. Meanwhile the war was escalating and before too long John was shipped overseas serving in Palestine and Egypt. Then it was on to Singapore just ahead of its fall and the threat of a Japanese invasion. After returning to Australia the effects of war took its toll and John was very unsettled. John and Ruby later separated with John moving back to New Zealand in the early 1950s. Around 1989 John and his second wife Gladys came to Australia, choosing to settle in Tweed Heads on the NSW/Queensland border.
